BBQ Fire Safety Summer 2026
Fire services across the UK responded to elevated BBQ and garden fire incidents during the dry summer of 2026. Disposable BBQs on grass, accelerant injuries, and overnight ash disposal fires dominated the incident logs. Here is what the data shows and what to do differently.
Key finding
Ash disposal was the most preventable post-BBQ fire cause in 2026. Warm ash placed in plastic recycling bins overnight caused multiple garden and fence fires. Allow 12–24 hours and use a metal container only.
BBQ risk factors: severity rated
| Risk factor | Risk level | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Disposable BBQs on dry grass | High | Radiate heat downward — cause grass and ground fires, especially in drought conditions |
| Accelerant use on lit charcoal | Very high | Volatile vapour creates explosive flare-up — primary cause of severe burn injuries |
| BBQ within 2 m of a fence or structure | High | Fence panel fires spread rapidly to adjacent properties |
| Overnight warm ash in plastic bin | High | Most common cause of post-BBQ house fire — ash remains live for 12+ hours |
| BBQ on a balcony | Very high | Rapid fire spread to building exterior; blocked escape route |
| Gas BBQ with leaking regulator | Very high | Gas accumulation and ignition — check connections before every use |
What drove the 2026 spike
Two factors combined to make summer 2026 notable for BBQ incidents: an extended dry period from June through August that left ground and vegetation tinder-dry, and continued growth in disposable BBQ use. Disposable BBQs are convenient but present a distinct hazard profile from permanent models — they radiate intense heat downward through a thin foil base, with ground temperatures directly beneath reaching levels sufficient to ignite dry grass and composted material.
Several multi-property incidents began with a disposable BBQ on a shared green space, dry grass catching, and fire spreading to adjacent timber fencing and garden sheds. Fence panel fires spread at speed and require fire service intervention.
Accelerant injuries remain stubbornly common
Despite consistent public safety messaging, UK burn units continue to treat patients injured by pouring flammable liquid onto lit or smouldering charcoal. The vapour from petrol, methylated spirit, or BBQ lighter fluid travels ahead of the liquid and ignites explosively. The resulting fireball travels back along the vapour trail toward the user. Only use solid or gel firelighters, or a chimney starter. For more detail on correct BBQ lighting, see our full BBQ fire safety guide.
Balcony BBQs: the multi-flat risk
Fire services responded to a number of incidents where a BBQ on a high-rise flat balcony caused fire to spread vertically to the floor above. In buildings with combustible cladding, this presents a serious risk of rapid external fire spread. Several blocks had to be evacuated. If you live in a flat, check your lease — most prohibit open flames on balconies. Even where not prohibited, the risk to neighbours is significant.
